STUDIO KIDS: Feathers & Nature Printmaking
What you'll do
Step gently into the wonders of the natural world in this creative four-week printmaking program designed especially for primary school students.
Using a fun and versatile tool called a gel plate, students will explore the beautiful shapes and textures of feathers to create their own collection of unique prints.
This program is all about creativity, curiosity, and storytelling. Students are encouraged to bring along feathers they’ve found—perhaps from their backyard, a park, or a special outing—so their artwork connects to their own experiences and memories.
Over the four weeks, students will experiment with simple printing techniques to discover how feathers can leave detailed patterns and soft, “ghost-like” images on paper. They’ll learn how to layer colours and shapes to build interesting compositions, then use pencils to add shadows, outlines, and extra details to bring their artwork to life.
Throughout the program, students will:
- Explore fun printing techniques using feathers and gel plates
- Create soft “ghost prints” and bold shapes through layering
- Share stories and ideas inspired by their found objects
- Develop confidence using both printing and drawing materials
- Build a small series of finished artworks to take home
This hands-on program encourages imagination, observation, and personal expression—helping young artists see the beauty in the world around them and turn it into something truly their own

Facilitator
Hanna Wood began her creative journey with a foundational year abroad in Sweden, attending a specialised Arts School. This early immersion preceded her formal studies at Queensland University of Technology, where she initially focused on theatre and stage performance. Her professional development was further shaped by a multifaceted role at Doggett Street Art Studio, where she gained hands-on industry experience in archival framing, exhibition installation, and artist liaison.
These experiences, alongside work with the University of Queensland Art Museum and various community projects, fostered a broad, socially engaged practice. A pivotal period teaching visual art in South Korea transitioned Hanna’s focus toward arts education, finding a natural balance between her own creative work and her passion for teaching others. Today, she maintains a dual practice as a Visual Arts Educator and as Principal Artist at Curlew Arts, bridging the gap between classroom pedagogy and people-centric initiatives. This leadership allows her to use creative practice to foster connection and support communities to share stories of identity and place. Her contemporary studio practice is primarily centred on printmaking.
